“Chill’ è proprij ‘nu casatiell’!”, is an expression used to describe a heavy, messy, hard-to-digest person, just like this delicious staple of Neapolitan Easter tradition.
Casatiello is in fact prepared with a basic dough similar to bread dough, with the addition of lard and a filling of “cicoli”, pecorino cheese and salami.
To crown it all whole eggs, covered with two thin strips of dough, symbolizing the Christian cross.
Illustration made for the online magazine The Napolitaner.
